Overview

Serbia has a rich Roman heritage with archaeological sites that are on the UNESCO list. On her territory 17 Roman emperors were born. Following the stream of the Danube river situated on the former Limes, the border of the Roman Empire, you will have the opportunity to see the beautiful landscapes of the Djerdap gorge, to visit the magnificent Viminacium, a former Roman city and legionary camp. Following the footsteps of the Roman emperors, you will visit Nis (Naissus), the birthplace of the Emperor Constantine The Great, Felix Romuliana, the complex of palaces and temples built by Emperor Galerius, and the former Roman capital and metropolis of Sirmium with its Imperial Palace. Come and explore with us some of the most significant Roman monuments and palaces, but also discover lesser-known hidden jewels.

Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival in Belgrade

Arrival in Belgrade. Transfer to the hotel.
We will start our walking tour, immersing ourselves into the history of the ancient city of Singidunum (actual Belgrade), the birthplace of the Roman emperor Jovian (Flavius Claudius Jovianus). We will discover the Kalemegdan fortress built in the 1st century AD which became a Roman military camp. Afterwards we will visit the catacombs, the gunpowder magazine, the Roman well and the clock tower (Sahat Kula).
Lunch in a restaurant in the fortress.
This afternoon we will visit the National museum especially the archaeological section. Return to the hotel.
Dinner and overnight in Belgrade.

Day 2. Belgrade, Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium)

Departure to Sirmium, the actual town of Sremska Mitrovica.
Sirmium was one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd century. We will see the remains of the imperial palace and we will have the opportunity to imagine that the city was an important center for trade and a crossing road of the Empire at the time.
Lunch during the visit.
Back to Belgrade.
We will end our day by visiting the Ethnographic museum which will show us the cultural diversity of the region.
Return to the hotel.

Day 3. Belgrade, Viminacium, Golubac Fortress, Lepenski Vir, Kladovo

Departure to Viminacium which was a military camp during the Roman Empire and one of the most important cities of the province of Moesia from the 1st to the 4th century. We will visit the archaeological park of Viminacium.
Roman inspired lunch in the restaurant on the archaeological site. (for groups above 10 persons).
This afternoon, we will visit the Golubac Fortress, a medieval fortified city (XIV century) erected at the entrance of the Djerdap gorge. We continue our journey by visiting the archaeological site of Lepenski Vir dating from the Mesolithic period (between 6500 and 5500 BC). We will continue our trip to Kladovo, one of the oldest cities on the right bank of the river Danube which was a Roman camp located on the “limes” which represents the border line of the Roman Empire.

Day 4. Djerdap National Park

We will visit the archaeological museum of Djerdap which presents the Roman period of the region.
Afterwards, we will visit the Diana fortress, an ancient Roman castrum built by Trajan in the 2nd century.
Lunch during the visit.
This afternoon we will go on a cruise on the river Danube and we will enjoy the beauty of its landscapes. We will see the Roman memorial plaque, (“Tabula Traiana”), a Latin inscription engraved on a rock dedicated to the Roman emperor Trajan which is overlooking the Iron Gates, the scenic gorge of the river Danube. We will also see the remains of the Trajan bridge and the Pontes castrum.
Back to Kladovo.

Day 5. Kladovo, Romuliana, Nis

Today our route will take us to the archaeological site of Gamzigrad-Romuliana, the Palace of Galerius which is on the World Heritage UNESCO list since 2007. This fortified palace was built in the 3rd century by the Emperor Galerius (Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus). We will see the remains of the palace, the basilicas, temples, hot baths, memorial complex, and a tetra-pylon.

This afternoon, we will go to Naissus, the actual city of Nis where the emperor Constantine the Great was born. He promulgated the edict of Milan in 313 recognizing the freedom of worship for all, which allowed Christians to freely practice their religion in the Roman Empire. We will visit the Nis fortress built by the Ottomans in 1723 on the site of the Roman castrum of Naissus and we’ll see the remains of the Roman baths, villas and tombs.

Day 6. Nis, Mediana, Caricin Grad

Today we will visit the Mediana archaeological site, the summer residence of the emperor Constantine the Great. Here can be seen the fragments of the peristyle, baths, attic, water tower and mosaics (subject to authorization, the site is closed to the public).
After, our tour continue to the Malca wine cellar. We will make a tour of the estate and have a wine tasting along with a Roman lunch.
After the lunch we are going to visit the Caricin Grad or Justiniana Prima archaeological site, a city founded by the emperor Justinian around 530.
